AWHA on H.R. 1- The One Big Brutal Bill
H.R. 1 is certainly big, but it will ultimately butcher protections for young people facing housing insecurity and more.
Earlier this month, while many of us celebrated freedom and independence, a different kind of decision was made—President Trump signed H.R.1 into law, a bill that strips away essential protections for our most vulnerable. Cuts to Medicaid, SNAP, and student aid will disproportionately harm youth exiting foster care, experiencing homelessness, or struggling to survive on the margins. We ask you: Is this the America we want to live in—one where opportunity is reserved for the privileged and struggle is met with silence?
We believe there's a better way. The New Deal to End Youth Homelessness is our bold alternative—a national roadmap grounded in justice, equity, and the wisdom of young people themselves. Built around five pillars—housing justice, child welfare justice, legal system justice, economic justice, and immigration justice—this is not just a policy framework, but a vision for a nation where every young person is supported, housed, and free to thrive. Even in the face of painful setbacks like H.R.1, we hold onto hope—and we hold onto each other. We invite you to join us in building the future our youth deserve. A future with safety nets that work for all, not just some.
